Seven top stars withdraw, but Rory McIlroy is still teeing it up – that's the headline ahead of the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship! A wave of prominent withdrawals is shaking up the field for the first DP World Tour Playoff event in the United Arab Emirates. Rumors are swirling, and security concerns in the Middle East seem to be playing a major role, even if the players' exact reasons have not been officially confirmed.
Just imagine: Shane Lowry, Matt Fitzpatrick, Ryan Fox, Ludvig Åberg, Min Woo Lee, Robert MacIntyre, and Justin Rose – these names are missing from the start list! Additionally, other big names like Alex Fitzpatrick, Si Woo Kim, and Ryan Gerard are absent. This is a significant blow, making the field for the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship, which takes place from November 5th to 8th at Yas Links, look considerably different.
Rory's Stand and the Tour's Position
Despite all the unrest, Rory McIlroy makes a clear statement: He remains committed to the Playoff events in the UAE and is registered for both, the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship and the DP World Tour Championship from November 12th to 15th in Dubai. His belief: If local governments classify the tournaments as safe, they would not endanger residents or visitors. Rory is looking forward to returning to the Middle East, and that's a clear signal to the competition. Meanwhile, the DP World Tour is in contact with international advisors – professionally, as one would expect.
Race to Dubai in Flux
These withdrawals could significantly shake up the Race to Dubai. Eugenio Chacarra leads the ranking after recently winning the DP World India Championship – a victory where McIlroy finished 42nd, 17 strokes behind. Patrick Reed and McIlroy are, of course, hot contenders, but Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, and Adam Scott are also expected. Before the withdrawals, Ryan Fox was sixth in the Race to Dubai and still had an outside chance, while Fitzpatrick was in 10th place. Their absence from Abu Dhabi is a drastic cut and will make the hunt for the title extremely exciting. The top 70 are present in Abu Dhabi, but only the top 50 advance to Dubai – it's really getting tight now!
