8 Under! Laopakdee Eyes History at Asia-Pacific Amateur

Fifa Laopakdee came out firing in round one, setting his sights on a historic title defense at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship! The reigning champion from Thailand posted a blistering 8-under 63 on New Zealand's Te Arai Links South Course, securing a three-shot lead after the opening round. The 21-year-old Thai, a college standout from Arizona State, was clinical: seven birdies, an eagle on the short ninth hole, and just one bogey adorned his scorecard. A sensational round that, despite challenging wind conditions, was just one shot shy of the tournament record and propelled Laopakdee into pole position.

Chasers Under Pressure

Behind Laopakdee, the local contingent from New Zealand is trying to catch up. Joshua Bai posted a strong 5-under 66, but is already three shots behind. Directly behind him, at 4-under par, lurk his compatriots Ryan Xie and Cooper Moore, who also got off to a solid start. Laopakdee's dominant performance puts the entire chasing pack under immense pressure and shows that he won't give up his title without a fight. The best Japanese player, Kaito Sato, is at 3-under par (68), while last year's finalist, Taisei Nagasaki, had a tough start with a 3-over 74 and sits in 40th place.

Major Spots in Sight

For Laopakdee, this is about more than just a title: he could become the first golfer in the tournament's history to successfully defend his title. His victory in 2025 in Dubai – then in a playoff against none other than Nagasaki – made him the first Thai winner of this prestigious event. The champion receives coveted spots in the 2027 Masters and Open Championship; the runner-up gets at least a spot in Open Qualifying. Laopakdee already secured his Masters spot and an entry into the 2026 Open Championship with his 2025 victory. Another brilliant performance would once again pave his way to both majors in 2027 – a double major pass that would leave the golf world in awe. Things are going well for the youngster!
