Graeme McDowell is packing his bags at LIV Golf, officially ushering in the next chapter of his career. The former US Open champion has confirmed he will not continue with LIV 2.0, signaling a genuine shift in the professional golf landscape. At 47 years old, McDowell is no rookie, but after four seasons with the Saudi-backed league – which he joined in 2022 – he sees his future elsewhere. His best performance at LIV was a tied second place finish in 2025 in Virginia.
Exodus on the Green
McDowell's departure is not an isolated incident but part of a broader exodus that is significantly impacting LIV Golf. Jon Rahm and Louis Oosthuizen have also already confirmed their departures, while names like Tom McKibbin, Tyrrell Hatton, and Ian Poulter have also left the league. Reportedly, only about 15 players have expressed provisional interest in LIV 2.0 for 2027, making the future of the tournament schedule look quite shaky. The Saudi Public Investment Fund withdrew its financial support in April after investing over $5 billion, and LIV even had to file for creditor protection last month.
Back to the Roots?
The big question now is: What's next for the eleven-time DP World Tour winner and four-time Ryder Cup player? A comeback on the DP World Tour seems the most likely option, even if the details regarding playing eligibility and possible disciplinary actions still need to be clarified. McDowell himself had already indicated in talks with BBC Sport NI that discussions about a return in 2027 have been "really positive." His departure from LIV deprives the league of another Major champion and a recognizable European face – a heavy loss during this transitional phase.
