The 2026 DP World Tour Playoffs are fast approaching, and they're already delivering the biggest story before the first tee shot: some of the most prominent names in international golf are surprisingly absent from the starting list. The Race to Dubai Top 70 ranking after the Genesis Championship served as the brutal cut-off, catching even stars like Viktor Hovland and the Højgaard brothers off guard.
What a bombshell! Viktor Hovland, usually good for a stellar round, played a mere five events in the regular DP World Tour calendar outside of the majors – and found himself far outside the playoff spots at 102nd. A similar fate befell Tom McKibbin, ranked 87th. He aimed to return to the DP World Tour from LIV Golf, but his 14 starts weren't enough to qualify for the showdowns. For him, it means waiting until 2027.
The Bitter Reality
The Danish brothers Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard also have to watch from the sidelines. Nicolai, who played extensively on the PGA Tour, missed three cuts at a crucial stage and finished 107th. Rasmus was hit even harder: injuries limited him to just seven starts, placing him 111th. It's tough when not even both brothers are competing. Alex Noren, who focused on the US Tour in 2026 and secured a solid 36th place in the FedExCup standings there, also missed the last two DP World Tour events, finishing 109th.
Battle Against Injuries and Time
Thomas Detry fought until the very end with 15 starts, including the Genesis Championship, but he too finished just outside the Top 70 at 88th. For Marco Penge (97th) and Dan Brown (116th), it was a season plagued by injuries and illnesses, allowing them only ten and nine starts respectively. Even a backpack full of talent couldn't fight against time and circumstances. The playoffs will soon begin with the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship and conclude with the grand finale in Dubai – but without these prominent faces.
