Folks, hold on tight! The legendary Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida, is currently hosting the 2026 Valspar Championship, and we're witnessing a Sungjae Im who's playing away the frustrations of recent weeks. After two rounds, the South Korean leads the field, finally showing what caliber he truly possesses.
With an impressive opening round of 64 (-7) on day one, Im seized the lead, one stroke ahead of Brandt Snedeker. On Friday, he remained unfazed, defending his advantage against David Lipsky on greens that were truly fast and firm. That's quite a statement, especially considering where Im stood just this past March.
Comeback Kid Im Hunts for Redemption
Because honestly, golfers, the weeks leading up to Valspar were forgettable for the 27-year-old. Two consecutive missed cuts at the Arnold Palmer Invitational (76-72, +4) and THE PLAYERS Championship (75-72, +3) – he was truly struggling. But now? He opened the Valspar Championship with a spectacular 44-foot (13.41 m) birdie putt on the par-4 third hole. What a statement! This is the Sungjae Im we know and celebrate.
He's looking for his personal redemption here at Innisbrook Resort, after missing the cut by a whopping 10 strokes here in 2024. His putting performance (0.201 Strokes Gained: Putting) had been rather mediocre this season, but he seems to have completely forgotten that this week – it's suddenly back on track!
The "Snake Pit" Awaits
And the competition is fierce, folks! FedExCup leader Jacob Bridgeman and reigning Arnold Palmer Invitational winner Akshay Bhatia are also in the field, as are former champions Jordan Spieth and Taylor Moore. So, it's going to be a tight race until the final round on March 22nd. Special attention, of course, will be on the infamous "Snake Pit," holes 15 through 18, which have shattered many a dream. This is where it will be decided who ultimately triumphs.
