Schmid's Rollercoaster: Drama at TPC Sawgrass!

Folks, this isn't just any tournament. This is THE PLAYERS Championship, the unofficial fifth major, and TPC Sawgrass is known for demanding everything from even the best. Yesterday, Thursday, March 12, 2026, our German hopeful Matti Schmid was in action and delivered a story that was as wild as a drive into a water hazard, but ultimately played really strong!

Matti Schmid: From Dream Start to Triple Bogey Shock and Back Again!

Matti Schmid, who currently sits at T17 with an overall score of -2, showed us how to perform under extreme pressure. His Strokes Gained values for Round 1 speak volumes: Total 3.12, Putting 0.67, Approach 0.72, Around Green 0.90, and Off-the-Tee 0.83. Meaning: His entire game was top-notch! He was strong everywhere.

The start of his round was a masterclass in golf: Until Hole 13, Matti was flying high. Five birdies (on H6, H7, H11, H12, and H16!) were on his scorecard, and the pars in between? Solid as a rock. At that point, he was already at a really strong -4 and playing an absolute sensational round. The greens at TPC Sawgrass? He had them under control. His tee shots? On point!

The Drama on 14: When Things Got Serious

But then came Hole 14, a Par 4. And this is where the drama really unfolded. Instead of the expected four strokes, Matti needed an unbelievable SEVEN! The result: a triple bogey, which threw him back directly from -4 to -1. A punch to the gut that would completely derail the round for most pros. But Matti? He showed what a fighter he is!

Comeback Qualities That Inspire

Instead of letting it get to him, Matti countered like a champion. On Hole 16, a Par 5, he hit the accelerator and grabbed another birdie, landing back at -2! Although he had to accept a bogey on the famous island green of 17, on the last hole, 18, he once again showed his class. Another birdie to close out the round! That's the mentality we celebrate at DELOFTED. Despite the turbulent phase with a triple bogey and a bogey, he finished the round with a fantastic birdie and secured a 70 (-2) for the day.

What do we learn from this, folks? Golf is a game full of ups and downs, but Matti Schmid proved that even a triple bogey on one of the toughest courses in the world doesn't have to derail you. His performance is a clear statement of his skills and his absolute will. If he can maintain this consistency and minimize the drama in the future, then big things can be expected from him on the PGA Tour.

We're excited to see what Matti delivers in Round 2. This guy is seriously strong, and we're rooting for him to continue his charge and maybe even contend for the win! Go Matti!
