Folks, what a rollercoaster ride it was at TPC Sawgrass! The second round of THE PLAYERS Championship once again showed us why this tournament is simply unique. While Ludvig Aberg and Xander Schauffele were showing top form at the top of the leaderboard, absolutely tearing up the greens, things really got intense for our German guys, Matti Schmid and Stephan Jaeger. And especially for Jaeger, it turned into a nail-biting finish that we DELOFTED golfers love!
Schmid: Ups and Downs in Round Two
Matti Schmid started Friday with good momentum after his solid round of 70 the day before. His plan: to further improve his position on the leaderboard. The round began with a par on Hole 10. Unfortunately, he then recorded a bogey on the 11th (Par 5), but the man from Regensburg immediately showed resilience: he grabbed a birdie on Hole 12. A few pars followed, before he was able to sink another birdie putt on the 16th (Par 5). So, the start was absolutely on track!
The turn to Sawgrass's Front Nine, however, brought some turbulence. While Matti first posted a few pars, then came crunch time: a bogey on 3, another on 4. He countered on 5 and 6 with two strong birdies, briefly sparking hope. But the 7th hole (Par 4) proved to be his undoing – a bitter double bogey cost him valuable strokes. He finished the round with a 73 (+1), placing him at T35 with a total of -1. What stood out for Matti: His putting was outstanding with +2.81 Strokes Gained, but unfortunately, there was room for improvement off the tee (-0.23), in approach shots (-2.16), and around the green (-1.03). But hey, he's in for the weekend at one of the toughest courses on Tour – that's already a strong achievement!
Jaeger: The Eagle-Birdie-Cut Run to Breathe a Sigh of Relief!
Now comes the real story of the day, folks! Stephan Jaeger, who was under massive pressure after his opening round of 75 (+3), had to deliver on Friday to make the cut. The cut line was hovering at +2. He started his round on Hole 1 and delivered an almost flawless Front Nine with a string of pars – exactly what he needed to stay in contention.
The Back Nine then started with a bogey on Hole 10, which surely frayed nerves considerably. But Jaeger is known for his fighting mentality! He managed an important birdie on the 13th (Par 3). But the drama saga continued: bogey on 14, bogey on 15. At this point, the cut seemed a distant possibility, the pressure was brutal!
And then it came, the moment that makes golfers' hearts race: On the legendary Par 5 16th, Jaeger played an unbelievable eagle! Two shots, ball in the hole – that's the kind of magic you need at Sawgrass! And as if that wasn't enough, he immediately followed it up with a birdie on the famous island green 17th (Par 3)! A finish for the history books: Eagle, Birdie! These two holes pulled him back from the brink.
