Rory McIlroy returns to his favorite course: The Boss has committed to tee off at the 2027 Hero Dubai Desert Classic and extend his record of four titles. Simon Corkill, the tournament director, rightly calls him a 'living golf legend' – but he also sends a warning to all fans: these appearances are no longer a given.
The Northern Irishman and the desert tournament – it's a true love story. As early as 2006, at a tender 16 years old, McIlroy competed as an amateur. Three years later, he clinched his first DP World Tour victory there. Further triumphs followed in 2015, 2023, and 2024, making him the undisputed king of Emirates Golf Club. A fifth title in 2027? That would be a statement for the history books.
The Northern Irishman's Master Plan
McIlroy makes no secret of it: he wants to streamline his schedule in the future to fully concentrate on the majors, reclaim the world No. 1 spot, and spend more time with his family. Corkill knows this and emphasizes that Rory's deep connection to the tournament is the main reason for his continued participation – but an annual return is not a guarantee. Every round he plays in Dubai could carry even more weight in the future.
2026 – A Year of Contrasts
The commitment for 2027 was already finalized in the summer, around The Open Championship, and made official on Monday. However, McIlroy has two important dates in the UAE before that: the DP World Tour's season-ending events next month in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. His 2026 season has been very strong so far: he clinched a sixth major and won the Masters for the second consecutive time – an achievement that places him in the elite group of only four players who have worn the Green Jacket back-to-back. Nevertheless, his path to the top of the Race to Dubai is rocky. After a tied 42nd place finish at the DP World India Championship, he currently sits in third place behind Eugenio Chacarra and Patrick Reed.
