Reitan Shocks the Tour: Rookie Claims First PGA Victory at the Truist Championship!
Folks, what a spectacle we witnessed on Sunday at the Truist Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina! Norwegian PGA Tour rookie Kristoffer Reitan not only held his nerve in a thrilling back-nine shootout but also snatched his very first PGA victory. That was pure golf drama, just how we love it!
Reitan posted a strong 69 (-2) on the scorecard and finished the tournament with an incredible 15-under 269. This not only secured him the title but also a hefty 3.6 million dollars in prize money at this Signature Event at Quail Hollow. A dream start, considering it was only his 15th start on Tour.
From Nearly Quitting to Champion
The Norwegian was visibly overwhelmed after his triumph. "I'm speechless," stammered Reitan. "This is so much more than I expected, and for it to happen so quickly is just surreal. A dream come true."
The story gets even wilder: Reitan joins his compatriot Viktor Hovland as the only Norwegians to win a US PGA Tour title. And get this: In 2021, Reitan had seriously considered hanging up his golf clubs. Then he rediscovered his joy for the sport – and now this! "It helped me rediscover my game, to rediscover my talents," Reitan said. "That was something really important for me, something I try to remember every day." What a comeback, golfer!
The Duel on the Final Holes
The back nine was intense, with ten players within two strokes of the lead. Reitan showed nerves of steel: On the 14th hole, he blasted the ball out of a greenside bunker to just over two meters from the flag and drained the birdie putt. On the par-5 15th, he reached the green in two and sank a putt from just under 2.5 meters – bang, 15-under! While the competition faltered on the final holes, Reitan remained cool and, on the 16th, saved a par putt from almost four meters after a bunker shot. That's how you play the game!
The Chasing Pack and the Seasoned Pros
While Reitan celebrated, American Rickie Fowler, who made six birdies on the first ten holes, and Dane Nicolai Hojgaard shared second place with 271 strokes. Fowler finished his round with a 65, Hojgaard with a 73. England's Alex Fitzpatrick, who still led after 54 holes, had to settle for fourth place (272 strokes) after a 73. "I'm happy for Kris. He deserves it," Fitzpatrick said. "He played really strongly today. Hopefully, it's my turn next time."
By the way, Quail Hollow is a place for maiden victories on Tour. Rory McIlroy (2010), Rickie Fowler (2012), and Max Homa (2019) all claimed their first PGA Tour titles here. Speaking of Rory: McIlroy, who last month se
