Folks, this is a real bombshell: The LIV Golf tournament planned for late June in New Orleans has been cancelled, according to insider reports! The Saudi-backed series was originally scheduled to take place at City Park from June 25th to 28th, but that's no longer happening. The controversial LIV series, which began in 2022, is currently seeking investors, and this appears to be having consequences.
And the crazy part? For a long time, the event remained officially on the LIV Golf website's calendar, as if nothing was amiss. Yet, the state of Louisiana had poured significant funds into this event: Two million dollars were earmarked for construction projects in the state-owned City Park, plus another three million dollars as a hefty hosting fee. We're talking about serious cash here!
According to The Athletic, LIV CEO Scott O'Neil and Susan Bourgeois, Louisiana's Secretary of Economic Development, reportedly agreed to a postponement at a meeting last Friday. The key issue: There are apparently major changes to LIV's business model and uncertainties regarding future funding from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF). An official announcement is expected on Tuesday.
This cancellation significantly fuels speculation about the future of the series. While it had lured several stars away from the PGA Tour with its mega-contracts, it has noticeably lost attention recently. However, the next LIV stop in Washington in early May is still scheduled to proceed as planned. It remains to be seen what's next for LIV Golf!
