While Tom McKibbin is on track for a title at the DP World India Championship and performing very strongly, Rory McIlroy in New Delhi has to digest a severe setback that significantly disrupts his Harry Vardon Trophy ambitions. A real thriller unfolds on the green, where the weather only heightens the drama.
Northern Irishman McKibbin delivered a sensational round on Saturday, catapulting him to ten under par overall through 14 holes, four under for the day. This puts him in a tie for seventh place, just four strokes off the lead – plenty of opportunity for the youngster!
Rory McIlroy's day looked quite different. After a birdie on the first hole, a veritable eight-hole disaster followed: four bogeys and a double-bogey. A spectacular bunker shot from 32 yards (29 m) for an eagle on the 14th managed to limit the damage somewhat, but with three holes remaining, he stands at four under par, a full ten shots behind the leader.
Spanish Dominance at the Top
At the top, Spain's Eugenio Chacarra reigns with an impressive 14 under par and a two-stroke lead over Joost Luiten and Angel Hidalgo. The weather has interfered with the tournament multiple times, leading to the third round being halted on Saturday in fading light. Play will resume on Sunday at 6:35 AM local time (3:05 AM CEST). Chacarra still needs to complete seven holes of his third round before starting the final round.
Race to Dubai Heats Up
For McIlroy, it's now more about salvaging crucial Race to Dubai points than aiming for the title. Patrick Reed, who holds the season lead, made the cut at even par and moved to six under with a very strong third round. Chacarra is Reed's closest challenger, while McIlroy lurks in third place overall. Shane Lowry also showed improvement after a difficult start, posting a 69 to reach seven under, tied for 16th place.
