The Algarve is getting serious and wants to establish itself as Europe's hotspot for overseas golfers. No more hidden gem; now it's time to get down to business: With luxury resorts, championship-caliber courses, and a climate that laughs away even the toughest winter blues, the Portuguese coastal pearl is targeting the discerning US market.
This offensive is cleverly orchestrated. The PGA Tour Champions' first visit to Portugal in July 2026 was a true game-changer. Players, caddies, and families flocked to the Algarve and experienced that not only is the golf top-notch, but everything else around it also fits perfectly: dramatic Atlantic coastline, dream beaches, exquisite cuisine, and a captivating culture.
Championship-Level Golf Infrastructure
The Algarve is no newcomer to the golf map; the game has been played at a high level here for a long time. The regional golf directory currently lists 28 clubs and an impressive 49 individually named courses – as of October 17, 2026. This infrastructure is incredibly robust and offers the perfect greens for every swing. European golfers have long known the qualities of the Algarve; now Americans are also invited to get a piece of the pie, without having to compromise on their accustomed comfort.
Focus on Premium Destination
Nuno Sepúlveda, Co-CEO of Details, confirms the direction: The Algarve "is catering to the American golf market." Regional representative Gomes sees the Champions event as a clear signal for a return to international golf events. To ensure logistical success, officials are pushing for increased international flights via Faro Airport. The Algarve is not reinventing itself but positioning itself as what it is: a top destination that is now truly becoming visible to the guys and gals from the States.
