Els: "Out of Control!" Champions Tour Divided on Rollback

The golf world is ablaze, as the discussion about the golf ball rollback divides even the legends of the PGA Tour Champions. Ernie Els described the distance problem as "out of control" and, in the current Golfweek report from October 16, 2026, calls for a significant reduction to steer the sport back on the right track. However, not all of his colleagues agree and offer a more nuanced view of what golf truly needs.

Four-time major champion Els is uncompromising here: Golf has gained an estimated additional 30 yards (27.432 meters) in length over the last three decades. He rails that modern players are achieving distances with a 3-wood that were once reserved for the driver. For him, not only scores but also the soul of the courses are at risk, as architects designed greens for shots that land and roll, not for aerial attacks.

Veterans, New Rules?

Padraig Harrington also sides with the rollback proponents. He urges regulatory bodies to take a "very hard line" against further simplification of the game. In his opinion, a distance reduction would hardly bother the recreational golfer, as their expectations are already relative. It's about principle, not about a quick round.

Not all voices on the Champions Tour sing the same tune. Paul Goydos, for example, is less convinced by the rollback as a panacea. He takes a more relaxed view, questioning whether course setup or other measures might address the distance problem without immediately changing the ball. This shows: even among the veterans, there's a generational and professional split that truly spices up this debate. The decision of whether the ball will soon fly shorter will certainly provide plenty of discussion.
