What a piece of news splashing over from the USA: Jim Furyk, the new US Captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup, is leaving the door open for a return by Tiger Woods. But before everyone dreams of the next epic comeback, it's likely more about a "non-playing role" off the fairways than about Tiger teeing off at Adare Manor, Ireland. Furyk, as Captain, is confident but at the same time fully embraces the underdog role for the US team.
The US Captain, who was appointed in April, makes no secret of it: The Americans are the hunted. After two consecutive defeats against Europe and their last away victory in the Ryder Cup in 1993, the pressure on the Americans is enormous. New impulses are needed, and Furyk probably already has some aces up his sleeve.
Tiger as Furyk's Wildcard?
Woods remains the icon of American golf, his influence unbroken. His long-standing relationship with Furyk makes him a top candidate for an advisory position or vice-captain. As early as 2019, Woods served as Captain at the Presidents Cup and even as a Playing Captain, but his recent tournament appearances have been rare due to injury. A return as a player? Pure speculation, as fitness or even qualification for 2027 are currently not in sight.
Challenges for the US Team
A look at the bare numbers shows why Furyk is planning such drastic changes: The USA has struggled significantly in the Foursomes of the last four Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups. The Americans secured only eight out of 34 possible points there in total, and against Europe, it was a mere three out of 16. To address this problem area, Furyk is planning a revised qualification system, a fresh analytics team, and even a scouting tour to Adare Manor for potential players before the 2027 matches.
