Jim Furyk made a clear statement back then: He demanded more from his Ryder Cup boys than ever before, to finally break Europe's dominance. That was the mantra before the US team headed to Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland, in 2025. It was a formidable mission: Since 1993, the Americans hadn't won the trophy on European soil. A drought that Furyk knew all too well – in 2018 in Paris, he was already in the hot seat as captain and had to endure a bitter defeat.
But Furyk, then 56, got a chance for redemption. He revealed that he had learned valuable lessons from the 2018 loss and his Presidents Cup experiences. “I will demand more from this team than any other US team has in the past,” Furyk stated clearly. He admitted that his team selection for Le Golf National eight years prior left him without “Horses for the Course” – a mistake he didn't want to repeat.
“I changed a few things immediately after taking on the captaincy,” Furyk recounted at a press conference at Adare Manor, where he stood alongside his European counterpart, Luke Donald. “You always have to think of new, creative ways to build team spirit and that special cohesion, but we still had a lot of work ahead of us.” Because let's be honest, golfers: Since the turn of the millennium, the balance has heavily tilted towards Europe. In the last four Ryder Cups and Presidents Cup matches, they only managed to secure eight out of 34 possible points in this format. Against Europe, it was even just three out of 16. “I don't think we're preparing properly for these matches,” Furyk fumed. “That's not an exception; there are several issues… I plan to make some changes. As captains, we need to do a better job.”
To maximize the US team's chances of victory, Furyk wanted to gather all potential players for a scouting tour at Adare Manor – and this before the 100th anniversary event in September 2025. “The demand will be high,” he said. “I expect everyone to do their best to be here. I want them to see the golf course.”
On the other side stood Luke Donald, who was aiming to be the first captain ever to win three consecutive Ryder Cups. After only one change to his team between victories in Rome and another important event in Bethpage, the Englishman hinted that he might adopt a different approach for Ireland. “I think the decisions for this time will change,” he said. “We'll get a good feel for what this course demands and whether some of the players who are currently on the fringe, the
