McIlroy: Players Championship Start in Doubt!

The golf world is holding its breath, folks! Our Rory McIlroy is struggling with an injury and has announced a true "game-time decision" for this week's Players Championship. Can he defend his title?

The Northern Irishman, now 36 years young, has indeed arrived at TPC Sawgrass near Jacksonville. But the alarm bells are ringing: Last week he had to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. And in just one month, he aims to reclaim the crown at the Masters – the clock is ticking!

Rory's own status report? "It's better than it was," he stated. "I hit up to a 6-iron on the range, and that felt okay." A first glimmer of hope? "We'll see," he continued to predict. "I'm taking it hour by hour, but it feels better. On Saturday morning at Bay Hill, I couldn't even stand over the ball properly, let alone address it. Now it's obviously better." Phew, a blessing in disguise?

In plain English: It remains a "game-time decision." But at least, according to Rory, the signs are "pointing in the right direction." And with a chuckle, he added: "Hopefully a good night, the medication works wonders, and then we'll see." That sounds like a declaration of intent!

Our man, after all, the world number two, had himself checked out by a physio last Saturday in West Palm Beach after he had to pull the plug at Bay Hill. Since then, things are reportedly on a steep upward trajectory. He even plans to pull out and test the driver in the first round on Thursday. He emphasized that he is pain-free while doing so.

"I wouldn't call it pain," Rory said, "more a sort of sensitivity." He described it: "When I hit balls for a while, the muscles in that area just feel a bit fatigued. The right adductor also cramped up a bit. But it's all good, that's to be expected." Sounds like the woes of a professional athlete, which we all know, even if only from a weekend range visit. In any case, he hopes: "I believe the sensitivity will subside over time."

And our man, after all, a five-time Major winner who completed his career Grand Slam last year with his triumph at Augusta National, is not worried about causing himself more trouble by playing this week. He listens to the pros, of course. But the message is clear: "What I've been told is that there's nothing I can do that would damage it," Rory said. "I don't think I'm at risk of doing damage if I play." That sounds like a green light, golfers!

Speaking of the future: PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp has simultaneously laid out some hot topics for the upcoming seasons. A tighter calendar from January to September is planned, with 21-26 events, more 120-player fields, and fewer of these no-cut events with smaller rosters. A "Marquee Open
