Aberg Dominates The Players Championship: Sensational Round and Two-Shot Lead!
Friday, March 13, 2026 – Now that's a statement! Ludvig Aberg conjured up a 63 (-9) at The PGA Players Championship, snatching the two-shot lead after Friday's second round. He was even just one shot shy of the course record. What a run!
The 26-year-old Swede carded two eagles and a whopping six birdies – with only a single bogey. This puts him at an incredible 12-under 132 after 36 holes played on the legendary TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The action on the green was truly intense!
After his first bogey of the week on the par-4 15th hole, Aberg wasted no time, responding immediately with birdies on the par-5 16th and the par-4 18th. That's how you secure a lead, golfers! “It went really well, I fought until the end,” Aberg said later. “The birdies on 16 and 18 were worth their weight in gold. Overall, I am very pleased.”
Xander Schauffele, who won the 2024 PGA Championship and British Open, is lurking in second place with 134 strokes. A 65 on Friday – truly strong! Behind him, American Cameron Young is in third place with 135 strokes. And tied for fourth with 136 strokes are Canada's Corey Conners and US boy Justin Thomas. This is going to be a finale, folks!
“For the most part, I felt like I had everything under control and was attacking the golf course instead of playing defensively,” said Schauffele, who, by the way, hit every fairway. “From the fairway, it’s always easier to be aggressive here.” Sounds like a challenge!
Aberg, the 2024 Masters runner-up, is hot on the heels of his third PGA Tour title. He already claimed the 2023 RSM Classic and last year's Genesis Invitational. This man has grit! Last week, Aberg was still third at Bay Hill and has now, with this run, set his personal best for 36 holes in relation to par. Two eagles on the front nine particularly helped.
On the first hole, there was a birdie from just under four feet, followed by an eagle from less than 15 feet on the par-5 second. Immediately after, he sank a ten-foot birdie putt on the par-3 third and chipped in a 23-foot shot for birdie on the fourth. What a start! “I had a really good start, made some strong putts, and even chipped in on the fourth,” Aberg recounted. “It was a good day. It's nice when things like that work out. Even though I struggled a bit off the tee in the middle of the round, I came back strong and hit really good tee shots on the final holes.” A true fighter, indeed.
And then came the moment on the par-5 ninth hole: Aberg was in the bunker and chipped in for eagle from an incredible 34 feet! With that, he was only the third golfer over
