Aberg Leads Players Championship by 3 Strokes!

Aberg Defies Pressure and Extends Lead at THE PLAYERS – The Field Chases the Swede!

Folks, what a Moving Day at THE PLAYERS Championship! Ludvig Aberg had to grind out a round of 71 (-1) on a day when things really heated up, extending his lead to 3 strokes after the third round. Pure drama unfolded at the legendary TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida!

The 26-year-old Swede, who finished third last week at Bay Hill, carded an eagle and a birdie but also suffered two bogeys to lead with 203 strokes (-13) after 54 holes. Now that's a statement!

“Overall, I didn’t play my best golf today, but I felt like I stuck with it, which was good,” said Aberg. “I started the day with a 2-stroke lead, and now we have a 3-stroke lead, so that's probably a good thing.” Understatement of the year, right?

American Michael Thorbjornsen grabbed second place with a round of 67, sitting at 206 strokes and within striking distance, while compatriot Cameron Young lurks in third place with 207 strokes.

“I don’t think I have to change much,” Thorbjornsen explained. “If you play really consistent golf, the birdies will come naturally… slow and steady wins the race, and we’ll just play solid.” The competition is fierce!

Aberg botched a nearly 60-foot birdie putt on the par-5 16th and also missed eight-foot putts for birdie on the par-3 island green 17th and for par on the 18th. “If only I had holed a few of those putts on 16 and 17, and of course the one on 18,” Aberg lamented. But even with his minor missteps at the finish, Aberg held the largest lead after 54 holes at THE PLAYERS since 2018, when Webb Simpson led by 7 strokes and claimed the victory. A good omen?

“This is going to be fun. A challenge, no doubt,” Aberg said about his lead going into Sunday's final round. “I slept with the lead last night, and that's fun. That's what we play tournaments for. I love big tournaments, I love these tournaments that have that ‘big feeling’ with the atmosphere. I'm looking forward to a good day and we'll see where that ends tomorrow evening.”

A star-studded chasing pack in fourth place at 208 strokes includes England's Matt Fitzpatrick, Norway's Viktor Hovland, Canada's Corey Conners, and US players Justin Thomas, Brian Harman, and Xander Schauffele. Things are heating up!

No one has ever come from further behind in the final round at THE PLAYERS to claim victory. Aberg, the runner-up at the 2024 Masters, is chasing his third PGA Tour title after the 2023 RSM Classic and last year's Genesis Invitational. Truly impressive!

Aberg stumbled on the 4th after his tee shot strayed into the right rough, but he saved a six-foot putt for bogey. Other top players also had their difficulties early on, as...
