Collin Morikawa: Shock Withdrawal from The Players Championship!
Two-time major winner Collin Morikawa had to withdraw from The Players Championship on Thursday after just one hole. The reason: a back injury that caused pure drama on the course.
Morikawa, who secured his first PGA Tour title since 2023 last month at Pebble Beach (what a comeback!), played his first hole at TPC Sawgrass, the 10th, confidently to par. But then came the shock: During a practice swing on the 11th tee, it was over. Nothing more was possible, the pain shot through him.
The American immediately sought out his coach. After a few more tentative swings, the bitter decision was clear: It was over – he had to withdraw.
Collin himself was devastated. "I felt great during warm-up," said Morikawa. "No signs of back issues whatsoever. Then I teed up on the 11th tee, took a practice swing – and knew immediately: That was it. I know that feeling when it happens. I can't swing through it. Believe me, I would play if I could. It's just the worst thing in the world."
What a bitter setback for Morikawa, especially since he had started the season so strongly! Besides his triumph at Pebble Beach (he's only 29!), the man secured top finishes: a tie for 7th at Riviera and a tie for 5th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Things were really going well!
Morikawa himself confirmed his top form: "Honestly, I came into this year with a ton of confidence," said Collin. "I put a lot of work into my body to just become stronger, healthier, and fitter overall."
Unfortunately, this isn't Morikawa's first rollercoaster ride with his back. He already struggled with similar issues at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and in 2023, when he had to withdraw from The Memorial. So, this is not a new story for him – but hopefully one that finds a swift and good end. Get well soon, Collin!
