11 Under: Fichardt Leads Simmons Bank Championship

That wasn't just golf, it was a statement: Darren Fichardt narrowly missed the magical 59 on Saturday at the Simmons Bank Championship and simultaneously catapulted himself to the very top of the Charles Schwab Cup standings. A phenomenal round that not only thrilled fans but could also secure him a golden ticket for 2027.

The 51-year-old delivered a fabulous round of 11-under-par (61), a tournament record and personal best. What made it even more dramatic: After just five holes, Fichardt was already an incredible 5-under-par, including a birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie. With five more birdies from holes 7 to 11, he suddenly stood at 10-under-par – the 59 was within reach! While the subsequent six pars on holes 12 to 17 cost him the ultimate headline, a closing birdie on the par-5 18 secured him the sensational 61. He finished his round at 14-under-par and, at that point, had a three-stroke lead over his pursuers Zach Johnson and Henrik Stenson (both 11-under).

Playoff Showdown: All or Nothing

This surge in performance is far more than just a single-day victory. Before this tournament, Fichardt was in a rather unenviable 43rd place in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. But with this performance, he is expected to jump to 13th place – thus securing his spot in the top 36, who qualify for the season finale, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix from November 12-15. For those in the know: The top 36 also secure their playing privileges for the PGA Tour Champions in 2027. An incentive that goes beyond mere tournament success.

The Tension Mounts

The Simmons Bank Championship is the second of three playoff events. Only the top 36 in the points standings after Sunday will punch their ticket to Phoenix. So for Fichardt, Sunday isn't just about the tournament victory, but about his entire upcoming season. Zach Johnson, who started the tournament with a flawless 64, is also in contention and aims to solidify his position while targeting his seventh Champions title. This promises a Sunday full of drama and crackling excitement on the green.
