Will Zalatoris is facing surgery, undergoing spinal fusion in late autumn, which means his entire 2027 season is now history. It's the brutal consequence of a prolonged ordeal that has spanned over four years. "I've been through four years of hell," he stated bluntly – a comment that offers deep insight into the torment of a champion who simply cannot find peace.
This is no longer a minor ailment, but a true marathon of operations. Since 2023, this marks his third back procedure. Following a microdiscectomy in 2023 and an artificial disc replacement in 2025, now comes the major procedure, one that even PGA Tour physios recommended. His last appearance was in April at the Valero Texas Open, where he attempted a comeback after 27 holes in cool temperatures and promptly reinjured himself. A bitter blow for the former world No. 7, who has since dropped to No. 610.
Final Round Before Forced Layoff
Before undergoing the risky procedure in Dallas, Zalatoris plans one last appearance: at the Austin Championship from November 12-15. One final tee shot before the long rehabilitation phase begins. The 2026 season was already a dismal affair with only four starts and two made cuts, in addition to a torn hip labrum.
A Comeback with a Question Mark
The big hope now rests on 2028, perhaps via the PGA Tour's Korn Ferry Tour. But Zalatoris himself is pumping the brakes and remains cautious. Given his injury history, he cannot promise a fixed timeline, which only amplifies the uncertainty. A tough battle that is just entering its next phase, and we're crossing our fingers that he finally gets the problem under control this time.
