Karl Vilips absolutely lit up the VidantaWorld Mexico Open, rocketing to the top with a sensational 9-under-par round. The Australian posted a career-low 62, catapulting himself directly into the spotlight – an absolute stunner that's shaking up the PGA Tour. What a start!
The 25-year-old, who stood at 141st in the FedExCup Fall Ranking and had missed the cut nine times in his last 20 starts, played like a man possessed. Ten birdies and just one bogey on the Norman Course at Vidanta Vallarta – now that's a statement! Especially wild: Vilips holed five consecutive birdies from holes 11 to 15, then followed up with another four straight birdies from holes 6 to 9. He's absolutely on fire!
The Battle for a Tour Card
This stellar performance comes at a crucial time. The Mexico Open is part of the FedExCup Fall, where players are competing for nothing less than 2027 status. The top 100 in the final standings secure full PGA Tour membership – that's the ultimate incentive for everyone teeing it up here. While Vilips already has an exemption for next season through his win at the 2025 Puerto Rico Open, a performance like this proves he belongs among the elite.
A Pack of Hungry Chasers
But the competition isn't resting: Kensei Hirata from Japan is just one shot back with a 63. A whole armada of players, including Ben Griffin, Adrien Dumont de Chassart, Jeffrey Kang, Marco Penge, and Garrick Higgo, share third place with strong rounds of 64. Griffin celebrated a brilliant comeback after a knee injury break, sinking an eagle, seven birdies, and holing a total of over 48 meters in putts. On the 7,337-yard (approx. 6,710-meter) Par-71 course, where lift, clean, and place conditions were in effect, driving accuracy was particularly important. With such a tight leaderboard, the stage is set for tomorrow's Friday – things are really going to heat up!
