Six greenkeepers have the chance of a lifetime: in 2027, as part of the John Deere TPC Sawgrass Program, they will travel to one of the most sacred greens in the golf world, TPC Sawgrass in Florida. The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) has selected these six fortunate individuals to go behind the scenes and experience firsthand the preparation of an absolute major event. This is more than just an internship – it's a deep dive into the Champions League of greenkeeping.
The Unsung Heroes at Work
These guys (and gals?) are the true artists on the course, ensuring that our golf stars can even play their incredible rounds. At TPC Sawgrass, home of THE PLAYERS Championship, elite greenkeeping is elevated to a new level. For the BIGGA volunteers, this means they'll be right in the thick of it, mastering logistical challenges and experiencing world-class turf management practices. Imagine preparing the infamous island green of the 17th hole for the Tour pros – that's truly impressive!
This isn't just about lawn care; it's about the precision of a Swiss clockwork. From irrigation to mowing height, everything is meticulously planned and executed. This experience is invaluable and a real boost for the careers of aspiring top greenkeepers. They'll witness firsthand how a major US resort handles the pressure of consistently delivering perfect conditions.
Training for Champions
The program, established by BIGGA with support from John Deere, underscores the importance of international education and exchange within the golf industry. In 2027, TPC Sawgrass will once again host THE PLAYERS Championship, one of the PGA Tour's absolute flagship events. While it's not yet finalized whether the six volunteers will be involved precisely during tournament week, the preparation phase alone promises countless learnings. For the six, it's a unique opportunity to participate at this level and turn the "what if?" of golf into a "we did it!"
