Cameron Smith made a strong start in Round 1 of the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, immediately getting himself into the mix.
NEWTON SQUARE, Pa. – Cameron Smith has a new voice in his head – and is already feeling the benefits. The 2022 Open Champion, making his first major start since changing his swing coach last week, finished his opening round Thursday at the PGA Championship with a birdie on the final hole, scoring a 1-under 69. This breaks a streak of 19 consecutive major rounds where he shot 70 or more. The Ripper GC Captain now hopes to end another streak on Friday by making the cut for the first time in his last seven major starts.
“That's been eating at me a bit,” Smith said regarding the string of missed cuts. “It’s not really the goal, but I really want to be back playing for the win on the weekend at majors. It’s been a while. That’s what triggered all these changes.”
Before last week's Maaden LIV Golf Virginia event, Smith parted ways with his longtime swing coach Grant Field and is now working with Claude Harmon, who also coaches LIV Golf captain Dustin Johnson of the 4Aces GC. The change was emotionally difficult, as the 32-year-old Australian had worked with Field for over 20 years.
