Scottie Scheffler is the best golfer in the world, but he's leaving millions on the table – and doing it intentionally. The current world No. 1 consciously foregoes lucrative sponsorship deals and public appearances to focus on the course and his private life. A strategy that is more than unusual in the modern sports business, yet it works.
This year, Scheffler has already earned an incredible $49 million on the course, with an additional $30 million from sponsorships. This makes him one of golf's top earners with an estimated $79 million in total earnings over the past twelve months. But while other stars chase every cent, Scheffler consciously limits his sponsorship activity. He is selective and rejects many opportunities that would bring him tens of millions of dollars.
Focus on Family Over Full Pockets
Why this restraint? Scheffler's priority is clear: family and privacy. He wants to lead as normal a life as possible outside of tournament weeks and has made it clear he would hang up his clubs if golf seriously impacted his family life or his relationship with his wife and son. For him, it's about finding the 'right people' and the 'right opportunities' rather than taking every chance.
He even declined to participate in TGL, despite many of his PGA Tour colleagues being involved. Lucrative appearances, commercials, or podcast offers that other stars eagerly accept also pass him by. Scheffler could easily rake in even more, but he's already doing incredibly well as is.
The Privilege of Success
Scheffler can afford this understatement because his performances on the course are simply out of this world. This year alone, he has already collected around $30.9 million in prize money on the PGA Tour. His consistent success reduces the pressure to maximize every cent through appearances or sponsorships.
He is a modern paradox: Commercially, he is precisely so valuable because he is selective. Despite fewer visible partnerships, his estimated off-course income of $30 million per year even surpasses superstars like Patrick Mahomes, Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland, according to Forbes. Scheffler is therefore not maximizing income, but rather control over his time and relationships. A true MVP who knows his values.
