Folks, hold on to your hats: World number one Scottie Scheffler has pulled off a real surprise move! He's withdrawing from the Texas Children's Houston Open, not because of an injury or poor form, but for perhaps the most wonderful reason of all: a new arrival is on the way!
The Road to Augusta
The decision comes after a rather subdued start to the 2026 season. Sure, he claimed the American Express in January, but after that, there were a few 'ups and downs.' At the Genesis Invitational, his incredible streak of 18 consecutive top-10 finishes ended with a tied for 12th place. Most recently, at The Players Championship, he finished tied for 22nd. The three-week break until the Masters is unusual for Scheffler, as he typically participates in one of the Texan pre-Masters events to sharpen his driving game.
Does He Remain the Favorite?
Despite this unplanned break, Scottie Scheffler remains the top favorite at Augusta National. His Masters record is simply outstanding: He claimed the Green Jacket in 2022 and 2024 and finished in the top 10 in both 2023 and 2025. In Houston, too, he performed very well three times in the last four years, with a second-place finish. The PGA Tour initially only cited 'family reasons,' but now it's clear why our top golfer is setting his priorities. Matt Kuchar will take his spot in the field.
