Dear golfers, Jon Rahm has once again shaken up the golf world, but this time it's not about a crazy putt or an eagle from a bunker. The superstar has dramatically withdrawn from the race for the 2027 Ryder Cup. Recently, on March 20, 2026, he withdrew his appeal against the DP World Tour's penalties, but still refuses to pay approximately 2 million pounds (almost 3 million US dollars) in accrued fines. This effectively bars him from the tee – and the dream of being part of the European team at Adare Manor drifts far out of reach.
The High Price of Resistance
As long as Rahm doesn't pay, he remains barred from participating in all DP World Tour events. This is tough, because without starts on the Tour, there's no chance for a Ryder Cup spot. Luke Donald, the captain for 2027, will therefore have to reluctantly cross one less legend off his list. Eight of his LIV colleagues, including his 2025 Ryder Cup partner Tyrrell Hatton, have already accepted the deal and are back playing on European greens.
Friction in the Team Room
This stance naturally causes considerable friction within the European team. Rory McIlroy was reportedly confused by Rahm's stubbornness, while Justin Rose publicly urged him to reconsider. And as if that weren't enough, Colin Montgomerie now also sits on the Board of Directors of the European Tour Group – which only complicates matters further. We are eager to see if this knot can still be untangled, or if Rahm truly sacrifices the Ryder Cup for his principled stance.
