The Presidents Cup was a “brutal” affair for Ryan Fox; the aggressive heckling from US fans, in particular, made his debut difficult. Despite this icy welcome on home soil, Fox delivered a truly strong performance, even though the experience was ultimately “amazing” yet “incredibly disappointing” for him – a feeling only the team format can generate.
Solo Performance and Team Power
Personally, the New Zealander had a solid 2-2 record. Foursomes, in particular, was his domain: alongside Min Woo Lee, he was an absolute force, securing two wins; the pair went 2-0 in this format. The foursomes matches with Lee were a highlight, but the losses came in a four-ball match with Adam Scott and then in his singles match against Xander Schauffele. Especially in singles, when standing alone on the green with fans loudly against him, Fox found the hostility particularly tough.
The Americans' Comeback
The International Team led 10.5-7.5 before the decisive singles matches, and everything seemed possible. However, the US team really turned it on Sunday, winning nine of the twelve singles matches, ultimately securing a clear 17-13 victory. For Fox and his team, this was a tough blow that tarnished the impression of his otherwise positive performance. Nevertheless, he would instantly want to participate in the Presidents Cup again, as team spirit ultimately outweighs any disappointment.
