Rory McIlroy: Opens Door for LIV Return to PGA Tour?

Rory McIlroy has opened the door a crack for a spectacular return of selected LIV Golf professionals to the PGA Tour, even if it's far from a blank check for everyone. On October 13th in New Delhi, he hinted that he would personally advocate for their reinstatement – primarily because it could ultimately benefit professional golf commercially. A move that is shaking up the scene considerably.

It's no coincidence that this debate is flaring up again now. LIV Golf is currently deep in trouble, specifically in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, after Saudi Arabia's PIF turned off the money tap. A potential relaunch for 2027 is on shaky ground, while rumors of further player departures are mounting and potential investors are waiting for firm commitments. This is the drama that makes this story truly exciting.

No Blank Check for Everyone

As compelling as Rory's statements are, one thing is clear: it's his personal opinion, not an official change of direction from the PGA Tour. Brian Rolapp, the CEO of the PGA Tour, had already clearly communicated that another special waiver for returnees is not up for debate. Existing rules remain in effect, unless the Tour fundamentally changes its policy. McIlroy also emphasized that PGA Tour members would need to be consulted before any decision. A bit like an open discussion round before contracts are signed.

Who Could Tee Off Again?

Patrick Reed is a prime example of a potential returnee. He already left LIV in January, accepted a one-year PGA Tour suspension, and is currently competing on the DP World Tour. Reed is on the verge of securing a PGA Tour Card for 2027 via a top-10 finish in the Race to Dubai – he has already claimed victories in Dubai and Qatar this year. Jon Rahm is also rumored to have left LIV, and Eugenio Chacarra, another former LIV player, was ranked 2nd in the Race to Dubai before the DP World India Championship. It's clear: the momentum on the tours is currently very strong. The DP World Tour, however, has made it clear that players who join the potential “LIV 2.0” in 2027 cannot remain members. Players thus have to make a decision that could even affect their Ryder Cup ambitions. Rory's signal is clear: he advocates for a negotiated path for defectors, not a general amnesty.
