The golf world has just had to digest a shock, as Jon Rahm has left the LIV Golf circuit, but his return to the PGA Tour is like a high-wire act without a net. His lawyer recently confirmed in court that Rahm will no longer be competing in the planned 'LIV 2.0'. Now everyone is wondering: When will we see the Spaniard back on the big stage of US golf?
The LIV Departure and Hurdles to Return
The reason for the abrupt departure from LIV? Rahm rejected the proposed restructuring terms as 'unacceptable.' Currently, his team and LIV are working on a separation agreement, which is reportedly to be finalized by October 15, 2026. However, the real challenge awaits on the other side of the Atlantic. The PGA Tour has shut down the 'Returning Member Program,' which recently allowed Brooks Koepka to return. CEO Brian Rolapp has clearly stated that there are no plans for a reintroduction. For Rahm, this means: No automatic path back.
Many golfers are now asking: What about the mandatory suspension? Typically, LIV players incur a one-year PGA Tour suspension for participating in unauthorized tournaments. Should this rule also apply to Rahm and be calculated from his last LIV appearance, a return could be possible no earlier than the end of August 2027. However, this is pure speculation, and an official announcement from the Tour is still pending. It remains a high-stakes poker game.
The Master Plan and the Long Road
However, not everything is clear-cut. Thanks to his 2023 Masters triumph, Rahm remains qualified for the biggest events: The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, The Open, and The Players Championship – he will certainly compete in these thanks to his special exemptions. Furthermore, he is an 11-time PGA Tour winner, which underscores his standing. For a full return to the PGA Tour, however, there is only one realistic, albeit long, path: He remains a member of the DP World Tour, having settled his dispute there in May. A really strong 2027 season could bring him back PGA Tour membership via the DP World Tour path. However, that would be more of a matter for 2028, not for 2027.
So, Rahm could certainly be competing in some PGA Tour events in 2027. A permanent spot on the Tour, week after week – that's a different caliber and still completely unresolved. The golf world is holding its breath and eagerly awaiting where the path of this exceptional talent will lead.
