A real earthquake is shaking the PGA Tour: From 2028, the entire competition format will be turned upside down and divided into two series – the PGA Tour Championship Series for top stars and the PGA Tour Challenger Series for rising talents. The Tour has now formalized the roadmap for this mega-restructuring and designated 2027 as the crucial transition season that will decide everything.
The Championship Series is where the action is. An average of 120 players will compete here, with no alternate list or special exemptions – only the best of the best. Membership is secured as one of the top 90 from the previous season, as one of the 20 promotions from the Challenger Series, or as a winner of a Championship Series event, including the Majors and THE PLAYERS. The only catch: multiple wins in one season do not stack additional playing privileges.
The Path Up: The Challenger Series
Fields of up to 144 players will be set for the Challenger Series, and an alternate list will also be in effect here. Members will be drawn from those relegated from the Championship Series, players from the middle of the Challenger Points List, the top 20 from the Korn Ferry Tour, and some new winners who otherwise lack a direct exemption. This is where players will prove if they have what it takes to advance.
2027: The Season of Reckoning
The stage for 2028 will already be set in 2027: Those who finish in the top 70 of the final 2027 FedExCup Points List will secure a spot in the 2028 Championship Series. The top 95 of the 2027 FedExCup Fall Points List will also benefit. And for players ranked 96 to 175 on the 2027 FedExCup Fall Points List, the Challenger Series awaits. A brutal selection process that will create relentless excitement.
