$1 billion extra for the US golf industry – this announcement from the PGA Tour is causing quite a stir. Tour CEO Brian Rolapp publicly supports former President Donald Trump's "Sunshine Protection Act," a bill that aims to make daylight saving time permanent. If this plan succeeds, not only could golfers stay on the course longer, but cash registers could also ring.
Specifically, the goal is to stop changing clocks twice a year and to retain extended evenings in autumn and winter. Rolapp cites estimates projecting 23 million additional rounds per year and approximately $1 billion in new annual direct revenue for the entire US golf industry. A substantial sum of money that could elevate the game to a new level.
Longer Days, More Cash?
The idea behind it is clever: More daylight in the afternoon not only means longer playing times for courses but also more flexibility for TV broadcasters. Who wouldn't want to watch thrilling final holes in the best natural light, instead of relying on artificial floodlight spectacles? The proposal passed the U.S. House of Representatives in July 2026 with 308 to 117 votes and is now awaiting the Senate.
Trump's Influence on the Drive
The fact that Trump himself publicized Rolapp's letters of support on Truth Social shows how political the whole issue is. Currently, the ball is in the Senate's court. One thing is clear: the promised billion dollars is an industry projection, not guaranteed cash flow. However, the prospect of being able to watch flights for longer in the future and the industry growing significantly on top of that is certainly worth a phenomenal round.
