Thunderstorm alert at Muirfield Village! The third round of the PGA Memorial was abruptly halted on Saturday as lightning and thunder rolled over the course, with JT Poston and Ryan Gerard sharing the lead at the top.
Thunderstorm Chaos in Dublin, Ohio
Both players were a strong nine-under par for the tournament when the horn sounded on the sixth green, warning of nearby thunderstorms. After a forced break of about 1 hour and 40 minutes, play was finally suspended for the day at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio – the course had seen enough of the waterlogged conditions.
The suspended third round of the prestigious Jack Nicklaus event will resume on Sunday at 7:30 AM (1130 GMT). Later in the morning, players will head straight into the final round, teeing off in threesomes from Tee 1 and Tee 10. It's going to be a marathon!
The Leaderboard: Who's Lurking at the Top?
Right behind the leaders, Sam Burns lurked in third place at a strong eight-under. His American colleague Eric Cole grabbed fourth place at six-under, while England's Tommy Fleetwood and Americans Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley shared fifth place at four-under. The field is still tightly bunched!
The Co-Leaders in Detail: Poston & Gerard
Poston, who incidentally celebrated his 33rd birthday on Monday, is eyeing his fourth PGA title – his first since the 2024 Shriners Children's Open in Las Vegas. A long dry spell that he aims to end.
Gerard secured his only PGA title to date at the Barracuda Championship last July. So, he knows how to win.
Poston sank a 14-foot birdie putt on the second hole, but then made a bogey on the par-3 fourth after missing the green. It was a rollercoaster ride right from the start.
Gerard countered with a birdie on hole two, but then took a bogey on the third after needing two shots to escape the greenside bunker.
But he struck right back! On the par-5 fifth, he launched his ball from the rough to inside three feet and holed out for a tap-in birdie – putting him back level with Poston at the top. Pure drama!
The thunderstorm had already delayed play earlier for 1 hour and 40 minutes, and it returned precisely as the co-leaders arrived on the sixth green. Poston faced a par putt from just under six feet, and Gerard a 14-foot par putt, when they were taken off the course. What timing!
The Big Names: Scheffler, McIlroy & Spaun
Also in the mix was reigning US Open Champion JJ Spaun, preparing for his title defense at Shinnecock in two weeks, who was in eighth place at three-under after 12 holes when the siren sounded.
World number one Scottie Scheffler, attempting to become the first player since Steve Stricker (John Deere Classic 2009-2011) to win a PGA event three times in a row, was one-under after 14 holes and sharing 12th place. A rare sight for the cha
