Stellar Par at 17: Charlie Woods Rocks TPC Sawgrass with Impressive Round
Charlie Woods delivered one of his best rounds ever at the American Junior Golf Association Junior Players Championship: With a 1-under 71, he created a stir and showcased a short-game display on the iconic 17th green of TPC Sawgrass that was pure thrill. Following his round, the youngster was in the top 10 of the field before play had to be suspended due to weather.
Woods' round of 71 was a roller coaster of emotions: five birdies contrasted with four bogeys, perfectly capturing the drama. Especially noteworthy was the par-save on the 17th, where he chipped the ball from about 4 feet (approx. 1.22 meters) to the hole and coolly holed the putt. Already on the front nine, on the 18th green, he briefly held a share of second place with an 18-foot birdie putt (approx. 5.49 meters). A clear statement, because compared to last year, when he finished in the middle of the field at the same venue with rounds of 76-75-72, this year he is playing exceptionally well.
Following in Dad's Footsteps
It's no coincidence that 17-year-old Woods is performing so well on this course. The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is where his father, the great Tiger Woods, won The Players Championship twice. A history that gives the green a special aura when a Woods plays the course there. Charlie is currently three strokes behind the leader, Esteban Llorente, who was already 4-under after 12 holes.
Deals and Future Plans
But Charlie is not only making a name for himself on the green. Off the fairways, the young golfer recently landed a NIL deal with TaylorMade – another step in a promising career. It is also already known that Woods has committed to the golf program at Florida State University. His second round is scheduled for Saturday, September 5th, with a tee time at 10 AM ET (4 PM CEST). The final round follows on Sunday.
