Stephan Jäger's second PGA Tour victory was within his grasp, but in the end, it wasn't quite enough for the Munich native in Yokohama. At the Baycurrent Classic in Japan, the 37-year-old had to settle for a strong, yet bittersweet, fourth-place finish – three shots behind the beaming winner Michael Brennan from the USA.
What drama on the back nine! Jäger, who had started exceptionally strong with rounds of 69, 65, and 67 strokes previously, couldn't quite maintain that momentum in the final round, carding a 70. Three bogeys on the last five holes shattered his dream of the title and collectively left fans watching on screen and at the green holding their breath. Nevertheless, he secured his second top-5 finish of the 2026 season, once again proving he can compete on the big stage.
Jäger, incidentally, shared fourth place at the Yokohama Country Club with none other than defending champion and Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele. Not bad, considering he left legends like Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa behind him.
Up front, Michael Brennan, who had started Sunday as the leader, maintained his lead with a steely 68. He thus claimed his third tournament victory, at just 24 years old. His countrymen Keith Mitchell and Jacob Bridgeman made it exciting, finishing in a tie for second place, one shot back. After the triumph, Brennan admitted: "Maybe I didn't fully have my emotions in check, but I was calmer today than in recent weeks when I've been in contention."
For Jäger, the hunt for the next title remains open. He celebrated his only US Tour victory so far in 2024 at the Houston Open in Texas. But the 2026 season is going really well for him: Already in January, he grabbed a 5th place in San Diego, a 7th in Palm Harbor in March, and a 9th in Dallas in May. With this form, it's only a matter of time until the next win comes his way.
