An old friend in the Major circuit is showing strong signs of life: Muirfield, this legendary links course in Scotland, will host the ISPS HANDA Senior Open from August 10 to 13, 2028. This is the first Senior Open there since 2007 and a real boost for everyone eagerly wishing for a comeback as a venue for The Open Championship.
This news is no coincidence, but a clear statement. Following the AIG Women’s Open 2022, where Ashleigh Buhai triumphed, Muirfield once again shows that it is in top shape for big stages. It shouldn't be forgotten: History was made here, for example in 1980 and 2007, when golf legend Tom Watson claimed victory, becoming the only player to win The Open and the Senior Open on the same course.
A Comeback in Sight?
The Open has visited Muirfield 16 times, most recently in 2013, when Phil Mickelson lifted the trophy. The chances of a return are therefore absolutely real, but a fixed date is not yet available. R&A Chief Mark Darbon emphasizes that discussions are ongoing, but also that the course and the entire area still need 'some tweaks' to meet modern demands for events and spectators.
The current rotation makes an immediate return unlikely: St Andrews is hosting in 2027, Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2028. The earliest window for Muirfield would therefore be 2029. That would mean a waiting period of at least 16 years since 2013 – the longest break since its resumption after World War I.
More Than Just a Warm-up?
Muirfield's biggest hurdle isn't its championship status, but simply capacity and infrastructure. The R&A wants larger spectator numbers and more extensive facilities, and the historic links course is reaching its limits there. Darbon's comments show that the dialogue is constructive, but before the men's Open returns, structural adjustments are necessary. The Senior Open 2028 is therefore a crucial practical test and significantly strengthens Muirfield's position. It's a positive signal, but not yet a confirmation that The Open will truly return. The anticipation is rising!
