Michelle Zhang's Comeback Bid: LPGA Card 2027 in Sight

Michelle Zhang's Incredible Late Charge: Wie West's Namesake Fights for LPGA Tour Card!

The battle for a Tour card on the LPGA is always dramatic, but what Michelle Zhang is currently delivering is cinematic. The 21-year-old rookie, whose English given name was inspired by none other than Michelle Wie West, is making an incredible late charge to secure her spot for 2027. In mid-August, the consensus was that she was headed back to the LPGA Q-Series, as her CME Ranking sat at a dismal 160.

LPGA rookie named after Michelle Wie West making late-season surge to keep her card Back in mid-August, Michelle Zhang's CME ranking was a grim 160th. Q-School looked like a high probability for the 21-year-old LPGA rookie. And then, a shift. https://t.co/smh2Fsmpl3

From the Brink to a Breakthrough

But then came the shift, as Beth Ann Nichols aptly put it. Zhang hit the gas and delivered. First, a T-12 at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, followed by one phenomenal round after another, culminating in a T-5 at the Lotte Championship in Hawaii – her best results of the season to date. This performance catapulted her from beyond the Top 500 in the world rankings to an impressive 237, and her Race to the CME Globe Ranking surged to 94th. This means: She currently holds her full Tour card for 2027.

The Next Mission: The Annika and CME Group Tour Championship

Although Zhang wasn't qualified for the Asian Swing, chances are good that she will tee it up at The Annika, the penultimate event of the season. The next big goal is clear: She needs to jump into the Top 60 to make it into the prestigious CME Group Tour Championship. Before her recent successes, she had earned a meager $40,395 in 10 LPGA starts; now her season earnings stand at a solid $204,669. The young golfer, who moved with her family from China to Texas and excelled at SMU, now wants to capitalize on her momentum. Her father chose the name 'Michelle' because of his admiration for Wie West. With hopefully two more tournaments remaining, her mission is clear: hold onto her LPGA status and perhaps even rock the grand finale. She's on a roll!
