The defending champion carded a round of 69 (one under par) and, after being tested by strong winds and excruciatingly slow play, expressed satisfaction at not already feeling out of the running. He's four shots behind leader Joaquin Niemann, but the vibe is positive.
It started out very strong: birdies on holes 2 and 4 put him at two under par early on. But then came the double bogey on the 13th – a real setback that killed his momentum. However, the maestro wasn't deterred, carding another birdie on the 15th and managing to bring his round under par into the clubhouse. Six-plus hours on the course in wind and weather was no walk in the park, but a true marathon.
The Course as a Battlefield
The Amgen Irish Open is being held at Trump International Links in Doonbeg, a course that tested the entire field with wind and slow play. Rory, who won the title last year at The K Club and is chasing his third Irish Open victory – including his win in 2016 – knows exactly what it takes to succeed here.
