Hideki Matsuyama has his dream candidate for the 2028 Presidents Cup in mind: Ryo Hisatsune. Matsuyama wants Hisatsune to join him on the International Team and 'rock' the greens at Kingston Heath, Melbourne, Australia. The Japanese star Matsuyama makes no secret of his desire to have his young compatriot by his side – a clear endorsement from the Major champion.
The two already shared the tee box side-by-side at the 2026 Presidents Cup in Medinah. Back then, Ryo Hisatsune secured his spot as a Captain's Pick from Geoff Ogilvy, which visibly impressed Matsuyama. Although things didn't go as hoped for the International Team in Medinah, Matsuyama stated that Hisatsune 'delivered a really strong performance' and 'had his back.'
Future Vision 2028
Matsuyama hopes that in 2028, both Japanese golfers will make it onto the team, either through qualification or again via a Captain's Pick, to then 'give their best.' For Hisatsune, this primarily means stepping up his game on the PGA Tour over the next two seasons. His performance will determine if he secures his spot for Down Under.
Return to the Green
Incidentally, this wish was expressed at the Baycurrent Classic in Japan, where Matsuyama and several other stars from the 2026 Presidents Cup are once again competing. A total of 13 members from the Medinah teams are gathered there to test their skills on the green. Matsuyama himself is also not yet confirmed for 2028 – his form and the International Team's qualification system over the next two years will also be crucial for him. One thing is clear: This announcement is sure to spark conversation!
