The Ripper GC star finished the tournament on Sunday with a 10-under 62, reaching a total of 30 under par. This wire-to-wire victory by six strokes is the lowest winning score in LIV Golf League history. Herbert also coincidentally set the league record for most birdies in a tournament (30) and the record for most combined birdies and eagles (32).
Herbert's Momentum Builds
It’s a fitting result after a strong series of golf rounds, which began at The Open at Royal Birkdale, where his 62 tied the Major Championship scoring record. He immediately demonstrated this form over four rounds at the JCB Golf & Country Club, where he set the tone with a 61 in the opening round and didn't let up from there. Herbert's four rounds of 61-66-69-62 leave little room for discussion about who is currently one of the hottest players in the world. He attributed this performance to the confidence he had built at The Open and was able to carry directly into this week. "Last week gave me a lot of confidence that I can compete with the best," he said. "I just wanted to take that into this week as best as possible. I think I didn't get in my own way for the first two rounds, and then yesterday I started to think about it. It was just good to play like that today, when I was pressured by two of the best players in the world."
A Facade of Calm
When asked how he managed to appear so composed under pressure from chasers like Bryson DeChambeau and Tyrrell Hatton, Herbert admitted that the calm was mostly a show. "I think that was a trick to hide it. I definitely felt the pressure out there," Herbert said. "I knew it wouldn't be a day where even par or 1 under par would be enough. I knew I had to go out there and get it. I pushed myself the whole time, and here we are." He also pointed to a dose of luck that ran through the week, including a wayward tee shot on the 10th hole that somehow landed perfectly and led to an eagle. "It was one of those weeks where you get a good break exactly when you need it," Herbert summarized. "I played great this week, but I also had a lot of good breaks, which is really nice. It's good to capitalize on those too."
