What a showdown in South Africa! Bryson DeChambeau has secured the individual title at LIV Golf South Africa – and in an epic playoff against Jon Rahm. Pure excitement, folks!
Playoff Thriller with Eagle Finish
For the second time in a row, DeChambeau was in a playoff, having already defeated LIV Golf Wild Card Richard T. Lee in a duel in Hong Kong. This time, he had to contend with Jon Rahm in an epic heavyweight battle at LIV Golf South Africa. His tee shot landed in the rough, but what followed was pure magic: a fairway wood shot that landed 12 feet (3.66 meters) from the hole – for an eagle! Rahm couldn't counter from the greenside bunker. On the first playoff hole, Bryson thus claimed his second consecutive win and the fifth LIV Golf title of his career. Simply incredible! As the final putt dropped, DeChambeau, who shot a 5-under 66, was overwhelmed with emotion and fully absorbed the magnitude of the moment. “I just have to say, I love all of you,” DeChambeau said with tears in his eyes. “Thank you for your support. South Africa was incredible. I mean, it has to be the best LIV event we’ve ever had.”
Rahm's Stellar Round and the Crushers' Triumph
Although Rahm narrowly missed his second victory in three weeks, his 8-under 63, which forced the playoff, was recognized as the round of the day and proof of his impeccable form ahead of the major season. It wasn't just about the individual competition. On the team leaderboard, it looked like a home victory for Southern Guards GC for a long time – a nine-stroke lead after nine holes seemed insurmountable. But the Crushers GC had other plans! With a combined 21-under on the final day, they fought their way back and snatched the victory by just one stroke.
Crushers Make LIV History:
The Crushers were led by Anirban Lahiri, who played a crucial 8-under 63, which was tied with Rahm for the lowest round of the day. Paul Casey and Charles Howell III each contributed 4-under 67s. The victory was the Crushers' ninth regular season win and gave them the edge over Legion XIII as the most successful team in LIV Golf history. “This is huge. This is huge for our momentum,” DeChambeau said about the Crushers' team victory. “I said earlier in the week that we just needed a little bit of time, and we would show our true colors, and they played outstanding today, and I pulled it through.” “That’s pretty awesome,” Howell III added. “Well, we’re also the only team that has stayed together the whole time. We’ve never separated. That was us. And then Bryson’s golf game again. That was pretty special golf.”
South Africa Celebrates its Golf Festival
Despite the narrow defeat, there were standing ovations for the home team. The Southern Guards were led by Dean Burmester, who shot a 5-under 66 and finished T6, concluding an emotional week.
