LIV Golf South Africa: Golf & Sustainable Legacy

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – After a historic week at the inaugural LIV Golf South Africa event in Steyn City, the tournament left a lasting impact throughout Gauteng through youth development, community engagement programs, and industry-leading sustainability efforts. From introducing young golfers to the sport and bringing the tournament experience directly to surrounding communities, to reducing environmental impact through innovative event infrastructure, LIV Golf South Africa demonstrated how global sports can create significant benefits beyond competition and the course.

Smart Course Management

Course preparation? A true statement in sustainability! Trees that had to be removed to accommodate temporary hospitality structures were not simply disposed of but processed into wood chips. (Photo: Charles Laberge/LIV Golf) These over 500 cubic meters of mulch then served as permanent, natural paths for spectators and fan activation areas throughout the course and will later decompose naturally – optimal fertilizer for the soil. And because they are serious about it: For every tree that had to make way, two new ones were planted. We call that a fair trade!

A First-Class Ecosystem

Beyond the fairways, things are also going exceptionally well: Large areas were preserved as natural veld. Less mowing, less impact. And across the entire grounds, over one million trees, shrubs, and groundcovers have been established. A vibrant ecosystem that supports wildlife such as springboks, impalas, Cape hares, porcupines, and numerous bird species.

All these initiatives are part of the larger “LIV For Good” platform. It’s about making golf more accessible, supporting communities, and protecting the environment. Through programs implemented during the event, LIV Golf continues to collaborate with partners, foundations, and community organizations to ensure that every event leaves a positive and lasting legacy globally and locally. Every event aims to leave a positive legacy – and in South Africa, they demonstrated this very strongly.
