LIV Golf in the Bunker: Files for Bankruptcy Protection

LIV Golf has filed for bankruptcy – a true bombshell that has shaken the golf world to its core and completely reshaped the landscape. On Thursday, it became official: the rival tour, which invested billions of dollars to poach top players from the PGA and created bitter divisions in the sport, ran out of steam. The court filing signals an attempt at restructuring, but the future of stars like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm suddenly hangs in the balance.

LIV at a Crossroads: Billions Burned, Now a U-Turn?

This whole situation is a watershed moment, as the deep-pocketed Saudi investors had pulled the plug on LIV Golf earlier this year (2026). Nevertheless, the organization intends to attempt a realignment and return in a different form. LIV CEO Scott O'Neil, whose team had already laid off most employees in early September (2026), remains defiant: “This process gives us the structure and time to pursue a groundbreaking transaction and open the next chapter of LIV Golf.” Plans for 2027 include a return, “built around the fans, an innovative, player-centric ownership model, and as part of the global golf ecosystem.” Sounds like a grand plan, but concrete decisions regarding the calendar or individual events for 2027? None in sight.

The numbers speak volumes: The Public Investment Fund (PIF) from Saudi Arabia, which launched LIV Golf in 2022 with deep pockets, reportedly pumped five billion dollars into the tour before abruptly pulling the plug. Now, the PIF is providing a loan of nearly 50 million dollars for the bankruptcy and reorganization proceedings. The court document, obtained by AFP, shows that LIV collectively owes up to one billion dollars to at least 1,000 creditors. The largest unsecured claims – and this is a hefty sum – are held by the most prominent names: Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Dustin Johnson, each owed over five million dollars. The question is how much of that will actually reach the golfers in the end.

For its realignment, LIV has partnered with British investment group BC Partners and is seeking to have the US bankruptcy filing recognized in England and Wales to protect its international assets.

What About the Stars? PGA Tour Stays Aloof

Tour officials had already promised a “2.0” version, with new investors, a shorter calendar, and reduced prize money. But the big question is: Will top stars like DeChambeau and Rahm remain committed? According to media reports, player contracts could become void due to the bankruptcy, giving them the freedom to decide whether to remain loyal to the new LIV version or pursue their outstanding payments. LIV itself asserts that it is in “advanced discussions” with the players, including about an “ownership structure that serves the interests of the game”
