LIV Final on Shaky Ground! Cameron Smith: '100% Back to PGA!'

Cameron Smith has let the cat out of the bag: The end-of-season LIV Golf Team Championship is hanging by a thread, yet players are told to prepare for the final. What a chaotic start for LIV Golf New York, set to take place on August 4, 2026, in Bedminster. The rumor mill is buzzing intensely, and Smith, the LIV captain, is shedding light – or maybe not.

Final on the Brink

The sword of Damocles hangs over the $40 million event in Michigan, where the winning team would be promised a staggering $11.2 million. Several reports suggest that the Team Championship will be scrapped. The reason? The Public Investment Fund from Saudi Arabia is reportedly cutting financial support starting at the end of this season. Furthermore, at the presumed venue, The Cardinal, neither the necessary infrastructure nor fan hospitality has been established – a clear warning sign for any insider.

After reports the LIV Team Championship in Michigan would be cancelled, Cameron Smith says they have been told to prepare like it will happen, "We're expecting it to happen, I'm really unsure."

Cameron Smith himself is contractually bound to LIV until the end of 2027 and wants the project to continue. Nevertheless, he spoke plainly: Would the PGA Tour be an option if LIV were to fold? Smith stated unequivocally: "100 percent!" However, he also emphasized that he has no exit plans and continues to hope for LIV Golf's survival.

Showdown in Sight?

Golfers are eagerly awaiting an upcoming player meeting where clarity is expected to be provided. Should the tournament in Michigan indeed be canceled, the LIV calendar for 2026 would shrink to a meager two events: New York and Indianapolis. The uncertainty is certainly nerve-wracking for the players, and the entire golf world is watching with bated breath as this drama unfolds on the green.
