LIV Golf: Major Cuts! LIV 2.0 Struggles for Its Future

LIV Golf is overhauling its operations and bidding farewell to a large portion of its staff, while a leaner 'LIV 2.0' version is being feverishly developed behind the scenes. The news hit like a bombshell: employees were informed that their roles under the old 'LIV 1.0' structure would end as early as the first week of September 2026. The entire league is thus at a crossroads.

This radical turnaround comes directly after the 2026 season finale in Indianapolis and marks the end of direct funding from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). Over five years, a rumored gigantic $5 billion flowed into the coffers of the controversial tour. Now LIV must stand on its own two feet and is attempting to usher in a new era with significantly reduced operating costs.

The High-Stakes Investment Play

The clock is ticking, and LIV is in the midst of talks with a potential lead investor and several minority investors. One name that keeps coming up is Ted Goldthorpe of BC Partners, who has reportedly already signed a term sheet. But the deal is not yet finalized and is considered non-binding. LIV CEO Scott O'Neil spoke of a 'very compressed' timeline, and even if the financial blessing arrives, the majority of current players must also be brought on board. So, it doesn't just take cash, but also persuasion.

What this means for the players is still unclear. The PGA Tour has already made an announcement: CEO Brian Rolapp clarified that there are currently no plans for a special pathway back for LIV pros, like the one Brooks Koepka was able to use in early 2026. A streamlined LIV Tour could leave some stars without a fixed home – a real dilemma for the big names in golf.

The Future is on the Tee

Previously, LIV employed over 300 staff worldwide. What size 'LIV 2.0' will ultimately take remains to be seen. Much points to a significantly smaller, more cost-effective product with a streamlined tournament schedule. The coming weeks will show whether LIV gets a sustainable second chance or if the dream careers of many stars fizzle out. It is perhaps the biggest drama in professional golf in years.

LIV Golf informed the majority of staff Wednesday their employments will be terminated next week. September 1 will be most of their final days, and a few select employees will be kept on as LIV tries to seal a deal with investors. More with @GabbyHerzig: https://t.co/Ga2g4kLwrn
