Defending Champion Fleetwood: Putter Focus Tour Championship

For the 2026 Tour Championship, Tommy Fleetwood is once again fine-tuning his setup: A TaylorMade Spider Tour V putter is currently being dissected down to the smallest detail to perfectly match his controlled draw and his feel for the clubface. It's this kind of precision that makes the difference between good and absolutely world-class, showcasing how obsessively Tour Pros tweak their equipment.

This fine-tuning is no accident. TaylorMade is trying to refine Fleetwood's Spider setup rather than completely overhauling his entire game. Special consideration is given to his identity as an elite iron player and precise shot-maker. The reduced weight in the front part of the putter is intended to enhance Tommy's feel and help him close the clubface even better.

"The CG for him specifically this week is more of a feel thing.” One year after winning at East Lake with a TaylorMade Spider Tour, Tommy Fleetwood appears set to use a different Spider for his title defense. Here’s the inside baseball behind the potential change. ⬇️

The Defending Champion and the Monster Prizes

Fleetwood isn't just any player teeing off at East Lake. He returns as the defending champion, having clinched the FedExCup in 2025. This alone highlights the pressure on him and why every detail counts. And the Tour Championship is no local club event: The top 30 FedExCup players are vying for a hefty total prize pool of $40 million, with the winner alone taking home $10 million. This is about serious money and prestige.

Despite Tinkering: Putting Is Really Strong

What makes it even more dramatic: Fleetwood's putting in Atlanta this week was already an absolute weapon. He reportedly gained a remarkable eight strokes on the greens over four rounds, leading the statistics – and that's while he was apparently still tinkering with his equipment! So, it seems Fleetwood is sharpening his tools even as they are already performing exceptionally well. It remains to be seen whether the putter test in the coming weeks leads to a permanent change or merely remains an option.
