A disastrous 10 on a par-5, two balls out of bounds – Kevin Yu kicked off the Butterfield Bermuda Championship on Thursday with a bang that would make even seasoned golfers do a double-take. The Canadian's start at Port Royal was anything but relaxed.
What unfolded on the second hole, a par-5 at Port Royal Golf Course, was pure drama. After the first two tee shots landed directly out of bounds, the path to the flag was an odyssey through rough, bunkers, and nerve-wracking shots, which only ended with a two-putt.
Despite this impressive comeback, he ultimately signed for a 3-over 74 and is now fighting hard to make the cut. For Yu, it's not just about a quick win, but also about his PGA Tour status for 2027 – he was ranked 92nd before this spectacle.
The Field Charges Ahead
While Yu experienced a small drama on the second green, others performed strongly in the opening round. Chandler Blanchet seized the lead with a stellar 9-under 62, thanks in part to two eagles on par-5 holes 17 and 7. Close on his heels is Ben Kohles, who posted an 8-under 63.
Defending Champion Also Struggles
Even defending champion Adam Schenk had an off-day on Thursday, signing for a 75. It shows: Conditions in Bermuda might be enticing, especially the par-5s, which offer chances for low scores – unless you make a 10 on them. Yu's 10 was a significant setback, where other players like Blanchet capitalized with eagles.
