Golf: Rule Insanity! Moving Balls & Slow Play on Sunday

Folks, hold on tight! While the golf world is often embroiled in the LIV Golf debate, Sunday (May 3, 2026) finally brought headlines that remind us all why we love – or sometimes hate – this sport. It wasn't a spectacular eagle or a record drive that grabbed attention, but something far more absurd: golf's legendary, insane rulebook. Things really got wild on the green!

When the Ball Takes on a Life of Its Own

Imagine this: You've read the putt perfectly, just a hair's breadth from the hole – and then suddenly the ball does whatever it wants! Exactly such scenes recently dominated the action. From balls moving as if by magic, to pedantic penalties because a breath of wind minimally shifted the ball. Such 'moving ball' incidents, which often fall under Rule 9, are the stuff golf dramas are made of. Sometimes you wonder if the rulebook even originates from this world.

Alan Gibson. PGA Professional.

This is bad rule. The ball moves accidentally by one dimple, usually only noticed and called by an honest golfer. No penalty on the green. Please change this @RandA @USGA. Meanwhile golfers can use long putters and straddle the putt multiple times leaving heavy footprints.

Slow Play and Its Consequences

As if that weren't enough, the notorious slow-play discussions also joined the chaos. Sometimes you wonder how much planning an approach shot from 150 yards (137 meters) actually requires. This combination of capricious rules and sluggish play made for a day where golf once again showed its most eccentric side. It's almost as if the rules have their own agenda to entertain us all – or at least keep us awake.

At the end of the day, these bizarre rule incidents diverted attention from the ongoing topic of LIV Golf and showed: The sport of golf has its very own, unbeatable storylines. Even if we sometimes shake our heads in disbelief, it is precisely this unpredictability that keeps us glued to the screen or the course time and again. And that's truly powerful!
