DP World Tour Drama: Veterans Battle for Card – and Lose It
The Genesis Championship in South Korea was more than just a tournament; it was a fierce battle for the future on the DP World Tour, where long-standing stars lost or significantly jeopardized their playing rights for 2027. For many, it was the final nail in the coffin of their current tour affiliation, a merciless showdown ahead of the playoffs.
It hit Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Pablo Larrazábal particularly hard. Aphibarnrat, the four-time DP World Tour winner, had to withdraw in round two with a back injury after a round of 75 and five over par through nine holes. His Category 10 for 2027 is now lost. Pablo Larrazábal, a nine-time champion, missed the cut after two rounds of 73 – a runner-up finish would have been the minimum required. After 19 years on Tour, the 43-year-old must now take the arduous path through Qualifying School in Spain. An era comes to an end, emotions run high.
The Battle for Survival on the Course
Sebastian Söderberg, who began the week 101st in the Race to Dubai, also missed the cut and dropped to 103rd place. This pushed the top-100 mark, and thus his card, out of reach. Jason Scrivener, Zander Lombard, and Ross Fisher also experienced a bitter exit, their hopes for an improved position dashed in South Korea. The merciless rule: only the top 100 in the season standings secure a Category 10 card for 2027.
The Top of the Leaderboard: Young Guns and Open Champions
While dreams were shattered at the cut line, Casey Jarvis and Antoine Rozner engaged in an exciting duel at the top, sharing the lead at 10 under par at the halfway point. Open Champion Ryan Fox lurked in third place, three shots back. Jarvis, who already won two tournaments in 2026, simultaneously solidified his position in the battle for the Race to Dubai title.
The DP World Tour once again shows its brutal side. Fighting for the tour card for eleven consecutive weeks, as Aphibarnrat did, takes a toll on body and mind. Sometimes, even that is not enough for the next season.
