Sergio Garcia, the eternal Ryder Cup hero, is once again making the golf world pay attention: A PGA Tour comeback is no longer a wild fantasy, and his sights are firmly set on the golden ticket for the 2027 Ryder Cup. The 46-year-old recently secured a legal loophole out of his LIV Golf contract and is openly discussing his options.
In Madrid, on the sidelines of the Open de España, he trumpeted that a return to the PGA Tour was 'a possibility.' But that's not all: He's also eyeing a fuller DP World Tour calendar and optimized LIV plans. Sergio Garcia wants another shot at glory.
The Path Back – A Rocky Road
The path back to the PGA Tour, however, is no Sunday stroll. A court order in the U.S. has indeed released the brakes on contract termination with LIV, but a return isn't immediately feasible. The Tour has clear rules: Garcia would still face a one-year suspension due to his last LIV appearance on August 23rd. In plain terms: nothing would happen before August 2027. He also brought up the PGA Tour Champions – but he'd first need to turn 50 for that, which won't happen until January 2030.
Ryder Cup Fever and Donald's Ear
His biggest goal, however, is the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, Ireland. Garcia has already spoken with European Captain Luke Donald and made it clear that he will do 'everything imaginable' to be there – whether as a player or, if he doesn't make the team, as a Vice-Captain. As the record holder for most Ryder Cup points, he's eager to be fully back in action.
The most realistic path as a player likely involves a stronger presence on the DP World Tour. There, Garcia would need to regain his playing rights and significantly polish his ranking to convince Captain Donald. The goal is clear: to compete at the highest level, play as many Majors as possible, and climb the rankings.
